In Too Deep

The drama/thriller written by James Spillman sees the team behind The Silent Child reunited, actress/producer Rachel Shenton, producer Rebecca Harris, cinematographer Ali Farahani and director/producer Chris Overton: in too deep is a story with a personal connection and one I had to tell. My aim with the film was to display an authentic portrayal of two parents with the same trauma dealing with grief very differently, which leads to the film’s main underbelly – a fast developing, nefarious technology that is a concern to the world”.

Slick Films took on the project just before the pandemic hit, leading to a series of unfortunate events delaying the filming process. A few shoot days were added with a very minor crew to make the most of this, where some of the most powerful anamorphic shots were achieved by Ali Farahani. The writer James Spillman also doubled up as the VFX artist.

This is producer Rebecca Harris’s 7th short film, she has over 50 international awards for her films and over 200 festival selections. By her own admission, in too deep was her most challenging project to date.  “We were caught out like a lot of filmmakers by trying to safely pull off an ambitious project during a national emergency. The shoot dates were forced to be pushed back when everything was ready to go. When it was rescheduled all the deals we had originally agreed didn’t exist anymore as all businesses were struggling.”

Rachel Shenton is an Academy Award® winning writer and actress and currently starring in hit show All Creatures Great and Small for PBS Masterpiece and Channel 5 in the UK. She plays the part of Carol and was able to pull upon her own experience of grief for the role.

Stephen Wight is an Olivier nominated actor and will next be seen starring in Channel 4’s prison-based drama, Screw.  His other work includes regular roles in the award-winning I May Destroy You, Manhunt, Bluestone 42, Threesome and The Paradise.

Dolphragon, Rockwood Films, UB Films, Mimecast and Hunter Ops Productions collaborated with Slick Films in the making of the film.

‘in too deep’ will be released in festivals later in 2023.
